Viggo Mortensen played Aragorn in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy (2001-2003). Interestingly, Mortensen was not the first choice; Stuart Townsend was originally cast but replaced just before filming began. Mortensen accepted the role at the insistence of his son, a fan of the books, and completely immersed himself in the character, sleeping with his sword and performing many of his own stunts.
