Which actor played Jack Torrance in 'The Shining'?

Jack Nicholson played Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining' (1980). For the famous door scene, Nicholson, who had worked as a volunteer firefighter, destroyed a real door too quickly, so it had to be replaced with a weaker one. Stephen King, author of the original novel, was dissatisfied with the casting of Nicholson, preferring a less intimidating actor.
