How much do you know about Linguistics: Curiosities and Origin of Words?Legend, dating back to the 18th century, says that when the explorer James Cook (or the botanist Joseph Banks) asked the aborigines for the name of the marsupial, they answered 'gangurru'. The English assumed that this was the name of the animal, but in reality, according to the anecdote, the word meant 'I don't understand him' in their language. Although it is a widespread and plausible story, linguists believe it is probably apocryphal; 'gangurru' seems to actually be the word for 'grey kangaroo' in the Guugu Yimithirr language.
