The 'guillotine' owes its name to Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin. In 1789, he proposed in the French National Assembly the use of a quick and painless mechanism for executions, as an act of humanity and equality (previously, methods varied according to social class). Engineer Antoine Louis designed the device, which was initially called 'louisette' or 'petite louison', but it was Guillotin's name that endured in history and language, much to his regret.
