Karel Čapek introduced the word 'robot' in his science fiction play 'R.U.R.' (Rossum's Universal Robots), released in 1920. The word was suggested to him by his brother, the painter Josef Čapek, from the Czech term 'robota'. In the play, robots are artificial beings created to do human work, but they end up rebelling. Čapek not only coined the term, but established one of the great themes of science fiction.
